Bricks in the Six is coming back to downtown Toronto, this time to the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel and Conference Centre on July 23, 24, 25, and 26. This year we are going to be bigger and better - with over 30,000 square feet! Last year, we had just over 25000 square feet spread out across a bunch of different rooms - well this new space is one much larger space (the largest single room in the city) PLUS breakout rooms, with MUCH better lighting and no awkward columns! Hurray! And we are bringing even more interactive opportunities to you this year, so that you can find more ways to have fun and play well with each other. We've changed our website quite a bit (and it is still under construction), primarily to accommodate our changes to the registration process to try and make things easier for you. You can register and create an account now by visiting our "new" website at https://brickassembly.ca/convention/register/ - this will allow you to register for this year's 2020 event (and hopefully future events as well). Creating your account is just the beginning - once you get your account set up on the site, you can go to the "Shop" and purchase your "Event Registration," or "Vendor Registration" there. Early bird registration pricing is live now, until end of day February 29th - so if you wait until March 1st or later, the price will go up! Registering early also helps the organizers plan for the event, so please, the sooner you register the better We have a discounted hotel rate again this year, matching last year's rate at $239/night. You can book your room by clicking here. As mentioned last year, this is a great rate for staying in the downtown during the summer. MoC registration will be opening soon, and we are going to be working on releasing the schedule much earlier this year - stay tuned for that info! We are so very excited to bring this event back to you again, and can't wait for you to join us. We have received much feedback since our 2019 event, and are going to bring back the things you love, improve them, and make it as fun as possible for all of you! No doubt we forgot something, so if you have any questions, feel free to reach out at info@brickassembly.ca - if you have ideas on how to contribute, we would also love to hear from you! We are always looking for more help, and value a diverse range of opinions on how to make this event the biggest success possible. Thanks so much, and look forward to building with you soon Graeme and the Bricks in the Six Team

  13. I am super excited to announce on behalf of the AFOL Festival committee that the event this year is confirmed to be shipped on Aug 24-25 in Shanghai, China. This year, the event will be held in the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Center (SUPEC) which is located in the center of the city and in approx. 500m distance to the People Square LEGO Flagship Store. The event is a joint effort from all five recognized communities in mainland China and our local LCP, @Prince Jiang. It grows from a sixty participants event to a hundred in one year, and we are expecting another breakthrough for 2019. Being on its journey for 3 years in a row, I just love how simple it is. You get to see many different sizes and types of LEGO MOCs and you get to meet a full room of people who are so passionate about the LEGO hobby. What they need, is your participation. The registration starts today until 1st of August, but it can be fully booked anytime as the venue can only afford to hold 150 AFOL exhibitors. As a good courtesy from oriental, the committee has prepared super cool gifts for all participants. So don't hesitate to call your friends and get your signup done as early as possible. If you can read Chinese, please go ahead and register from here: http://afolfestival.cn/?page_id=4932 If you don't, please also feel free to send an email in English to the committee via enroll@afolfestival.cn with what you would like to bring for display. They will give you warm welcome and necessary guidance on how to participate. More workshops and activities will be announced on its website (http://afolfestival.cn/) and I believe it has a Facebook account too. For those who are just interested in visiting, the ticketing information will be announced in a later stage, so stay tuned. Just two quick event pictures from previous years, we look forward to having you here in 2019! Futuristic City Project by Heroes Club Chinese Opera brickheadz by leinhardt

16. LEGO fans young and old were thrilled to try out there favorite carnival games in brick form at a recent event hosted by HollywoodLUG. Local toy store Tom’s Toys helped host the event, held during the weekend farmers market in downtown Montrose, California. Attendees were able to try their skills at classic carnival games like Skee-ball, Ring Toss, Pachinko, a Shooting Gallery, and a minifigure guessing game. The games brought out children and their parents to play favorites such as Ring Toss and Skee-ball. Paul Hollingsworth, a HollywoodLUG member who built both games noted that “it was really fun to see how challenging the games were to both children and parents alike.” For the Ring Toss, attendees tossed large LEGO tires over the giant-sized LEGO figures built upon a pile of gray BURP (Big Ugly Rock Piece) bricks. The idea for brick built games started several years ago, when HollywoodLUG Ambassador James Banks built a large board for the popular game known as Pachinko or Plinko. “That gave us the idea that these could be fun to make more of. We sat down and brainstormed a bunch of games and started building them. The results have been so impressive from everyone.” The LUG members spent the spring and summer designing multiple games to be featured at this event. One of the most impressive brick built games was the shooting gallery designed by Brian Heins. Using a LEGO robotics brain, the defender can be manually programmed to defend the goal net as the user wishes. The user then has to shoot past the defender and make it into the net. “It’s a really challenging game,” remarked Heins. “It’s a lot harder to miss the defender than to shoot past him!” The advanced programming of the shooting gallery demonstrated that even the most sophisticated games can be built into functional brick games. The last carnival game was a test of counting skills as participants tried to correctly guess the amount of minifigures inside a clear jar. HollywoodLUG member Xenia Arriola helped run the contest and noted that “the kids and parents would disagree about the amount in the jar by a lot. And the kids were always closer!” Three winners won LEGO sets by all being within 8 minifigures from the correct amount! The inaugural Brick Carnival Games was a massive success for all involved. All attendees were rewarded with a free bag of LEGO brick to continue building with at home. HollywoodLUG and Tom’s Toys are already planning a follow up event in 2019. LUG members are planning away at new and more challenging carnival games than ever before! Many thanks to LEGO for support brick and Tom’s Toys of Montrose, CA for hosting. Keep on building! James Banks HollywoodLUG Ambassador https://hollywoodlug.weebly.com/ For more behind the scenes stories, follow the blog by clicking the "Follow" button at the top of the page.

BrisBricks LEGO® Fan Event is welcomed back to Brisbane’s Chandler Arena on September 29th to October 1st. Now in its sixth year, BrisBricks annual LEGO Fan Expo at Chandler Arena has over the years welcomed thousands of patrons to be amazed and excited by the visually stunning exhibits and this year will be no exception. There will be interactive displays and play tables; a large train layout covering scenes from a number of movie blockbusters; and much more. A couple of highlights this year is an impressive Batcave model built by talented master builder Brent Waller (who also worked on some of the model design for last year’s LEGO Batman™ movie) and a huge Harry Potter display with an impressive Hogwarts castle accessed from Kings Cross station via Hogwarts express. BrisBricks will also try to regain the Southern Hemisphere record of having the largest number of “Great Ball Contraption” modules on display. These modules work together moving small plastic balls around a track in all ways possible.

  20. A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Brickworld Chicago. Here are some of my highlights from the awesome displays and engaging sessions. Aside from Tormod’s amazing LEGO Ambassador Network session ? I was happy to catch Simon Liu’s TFOL roundtable. Simon is great at giving young fans a forum to talk about how they approach community and what it means in their lives. It was great seeing a couple “generations” of former TFOLs there to encourage them including Chris Maddison (a good friend from my own TFOL days long ago), Tyler Clites, and Nannan Zhang. I plan to bring the insights from this session into LEGO IDEAS and our AFOL Engagement department. It was so awesome to meet a few IDEAS members face to face and check out their product ideas on display: Tiny House by Daniel Barwegen Black Falcon’s Fortress by Mark Erickson Coraline’s Pink Palace Apartments by Holly Webster Crash Bandicoot by Jarren Harkema Falconhurst Treehouse by Tim Stone Pop-Up Book co-creator Grant Davis And finally a couple of the originals – Glen Wadleigh (GlenBricker) and Ellen Kooijman (Alatariel) from The Big Bang Theory and Research Institute sets. On the display side, a few favorites were: CincyLUG’s train layout. Their buildings really captured the feel of a midwestern downtown for me. They didn’t over-extend themselves and kept the layout simple with ballast on baseplates and beautiful trains to compliment the buildings. Terry Akuna’s Airship. Yes, that’s an actual flying, motorized, radio controlled airship. Great case of building a model with LEGO bricks and augmenting with other motors and electronics. Henley Street Bridge. I love infrastructure. This bridge was clean and included several modes of transportation and recreation in a clean cross-section. I was most impressed by James Burrows’ Jurassic Park roller coaster built using CoasterDynamix. It was fast, had multiple loops, and operated two trains simultaneously. He told me that it took him three weeks of full time building. Tormod, Yun Mi, Johnny, and I also had the privilege of being the first inside Adam Reed Tucker’s Blocks to Bricks museum. WOW! What an incredible tribute to construction models and building toys, celebrating the history of the building block that led to the LEGO brick and beyond. Adam's vast collection dates back to stone architectural blocks from the 1800’s and features his own wood and cardboard models as an architecture student. Blocks to Bricks is worth a trip to Chicago, where you can pair it with a visit to the Chicago Architecture Foundation and an architectural river boat tour. Chicago is my home, so I’ve been attending Brickworld off and on since the beginning. It was great to be back after missing two years in a row. I missed the M:TRON collaborative display though. Next year, bring back the power of magnets! Please remember to follow the blog by clicking the "Follow" button on the Blog main page for more great articles.

Over the last weekend of April, LEGO builders will gather in the Norwegian city of Trondheim for the biggest annual LEGO event in the country. Facilitated by the Norwegian RLUG Brikkelauget, PKH (På Kloss Hold - a play on words, it means "up close", but "kloss" is also the Norwegian word for "brick") has become a big success story, possibly the world's northernmost LEGO event, and the seventh edition will be bigger and better than any before. We're expecting around 100 AFOL participants and upwards of 5,000 visitors over the two public days. For the attendees, there will be workshops and presentations, an AFOL dinner on Saturday, and a few surprises - and for the audience, we will put on the biggest and best LEGO exhibition ever seen in Norway, with MOCs by builders from ten different countries and three continents. Among other things on display in the halls, we will have a minifig-scale version of Arendell from Disney's Frozen, a huge city layout, a collaborative medieval diorama, a minifig-scale model of the Dresden Frauenkirche in Germany, a microscale diorama of central London featuring brand new builds by architecture wizard Rocco Buttliere from the US, and the Dutch GBC connoisseur Maico Arts and other builders will collaborate to make the largest Great Ball Contraption ever shown in Norway. There will also be a selection of older LEGO sets on display, as well as building pits for the children. We hope to see you there as a visitor, if you're in the vicinity - and if you're not, maybe you'll consider signing up for our event as a participant next year! In that case, you could ask to join our event group on Facebook - you can find the link just below this. It's closed, but that's just to avoid spam - if you're interested, just ask and we'll let you in! Our fellow Ambassador Eduard Petrac took some pictures last year, to be found here - and Maico did a great video walkthrough, here.
