  7. Dear AFOL Community, We are at a point where we are comfortable and ready for new communities to become recognized and part of the ever growing LEGO Ambassador Network. We have been working hard - or actually the BrickMates have been working hard in 2018 (and 2019) to onboard and assist new communities and therefore we are now ready to welcome new communities. While we are aware that there are lots of communities out there who want to be part of the LEGO Ambassador Network, we also recognize that there is a limit to how many and how quickly we can add to the network and at the same time ensure proper onboarding. Therefore we will be limiting the number of communities we approve every month. This means that even if your application is approved it may be a few months before you actually gain access and have a BrickMate appointed. But all this will be properly communicated in the Application Process. First step is to ensure you have the authority and approval of your community to apply on its/their behalf. You, and your community, must also select a 2nd Point of Contact when submitting the application to ensure we have someone we can't get in touch with, even if the Application Submitter becomes temporarily unavailable. During the Application Process it is also advisable that you start discussions on and election of the person you want to represent you in the LEGO Ambassador Network - the LAN Ambassador. You can read all about LAN and the different types of Recognized Communities you can apply to become part of in the Visitor Zone. The Recognized Community Application can be found in the Forms Section. Please note that you must have a LEGO ID and activate it here on LAN as a Member Account to submit an application. For applications submitted prior to June 2020: The next review is June 2020. For applications submitted in June 2020 or after, the next reveiw is September 2020.

Paul Huang, General Manager of LEGO China, made an opening speech at AFOL Festival. This year we see many more high quality MOCs were brought to the event. We also have Donny joined this party, who is the first LEGO Ideas 10K club member from mainland China. And he also made a presentation about his experience of his LEGO IDEAS project. Besides exhibition, we also have many interesting games at the party. One of my favorite game is MOC competition based on parts from one existing LEGO Set. 14. On May the 4th the animation department at the Buenos Aires University of Cinema celebrated the Star Wars Day with a great event that included an open Stop Motion Master Class. The many attendants were able to experiment hands-on with basic animation techniques in an easy way using LEGO bricks. They practice with a pixel-art-like walking cycle, intuitive free-animation lightsaber duels and a huge LEGO diorama of Tatooine where everyone was able to make the minifigs come to life. This way, the LEGO Bricks were used as a way to teach the art of hand-craft animation, to celebrate the legendary StarWars saga and to spread lots of fun.

  20. LEGO fans young and old were thrilled to try out there favorite carnival games in brick form at a recent event hosted by HollywoodLUG. Local toy store Tom’s Toys helped host the event, held during the weekend farmers market in downtown Montrose, California. Attendees were able to try their skills at classic carnival games like Skee-ball, Ring Toss, Pachinko, a Shooting Gallery, and a minifigure guessing game. The games brought out children and their parents to play favorites such as Ring Toss and Skee-ball. Paul Hollingsworth, a HollywoodLUG member who built both games noted that “it was really fun to see how challenging the games were to both children and parents alike.” For the Ring Toss, attendees tossed large LEGO tires over the giant-sized LEGO figures built upon a pile of gray BURP (Big Ugly Rock Piece) bricks. The idea for brick built games started several years ago, when HollywoodLUG Ambassador James Banks built a large board for the popular game known as Pachinko or Plinko. “That gave us the idea that these could be fun to make more of. We sat down and brainstormed a bunch of games and started building them. The results have been so impressive from everyone.” The LUG members spent the spring and summer designing multiple games to be featured at this event. One of the most impressive brick built games was the shooting gallery designed by Brian Heins. Using a LEGO robotics brain, the defender can be manually programmed to defend the goal net as the user wishes. The user then has to shoot past the defender and make it into the net. “It’s a really challenging game,” remarked Heins. “It’s a lot harder to miss the defender than to shoot past him!” The advanced programming of the shooting gallery demonstrated that even the most sophisticated games can be built into functional brick games. The last carnival game was a test of counting skills as participants tried to correctly guess the amount of minifigures inside a clear jar. HollywoodLUG member Xenia Arriola helped run the contest and noted that “the kids and parents would disagree about the amount in the jar by a lot. And the kids were always closer!” Three winners won LEGO sets by all being within 8 minifigures from the correct amount! The inaugural Brick Carnival Games was a massive success for all involved. All attendees were rewarded with a free bag of LEGO brick to continue building with at home. HollywoodLUG and Tom’s Toys are already planning a follow up event in 2019. LUG members are planning away at new and more challenging carnival games than ever before! Many thanks to LEGO for support brick and Tom’s Toys of Montrose, CA for hosting. Keep on building! James Banks HollywoodLUG Ambassador https://hollywoodlug.weebly.com/ For more behind the scenes stories, follow the blog by clicking the "Follow" button at the top of the page.

  22. At classic MOC exhibitions, we noticed that children want to play mainly so we tried a new concept for our 2018 events. The shows have now been focused mainly on playing with LEGO and children and less focus on displaying MOCs. 30% exhibition of the MOC of our RLUG (MOC, joint project) 70% competition for children, interactive LEGO models, play zones (LEGO blue bricks, LEGO lose bricks, LEGO Minecraft, DUPLO) After the first two events and 4090 visitors, I can say that this new event type has been clearly positive with our LEGO User Group members and the cities where these events were hosted. We prepared different tasks for children. We offered children different focused building areas where they are as interactive as possible. We made the LEGO simple board games (pexeso, domino, lady). We also try to think about the littlest children. Many activities focus on them. For example, get to know a pet with DUPLO animals. Not all adult visitors are LEGO builders, so we have been using simple constructions to show some physical principles and basic building techniques. The truth is that the adult visitors were a little surprised because they expected a classic show exhibiting some playground, so they will be able to leave with children for an hour. Once inside children did not want to leave the show because they were having so much fun. Our members have really enjoyed the new set up as it allows their creations to be on display but also get the hands-on experience with kids and adults for shared inspiration and excitement! Some of members who do no build as much also enjoyed this style of event more as they were able to assist in the different kid focused activities. These events are also good for recruiting new people into RLUGs and shifting members from a "regular member" to "exhibitor". We have done two participation events with one more in the autumn. We will make minor improvements and adjustments based on the space available in the particular city. Everything does not fit everywhere. It also depends on how many AFOLs participate in the given action in the given location. Our next event is Kostkovani Pardubice on 6-7.10.2018. We hope you can come visit or assist as we are open for cooperation. For more behind the scenes stories, remember to follow the blog by clicking the "Follow" button on the Blog main page.

The Sacramento Brick Builders is welcoming its members and the public at large to its next monthly meeting on August 18th, 11 am at Empire Comic Vault, 1120 Fulton Ave in Sacramento! This month's theme is "Art", and as art is subjective, whatever "Art" means to you is what we're looking for! To keep up to date with all things SacBB, make sure to follow our Facebook page which is updated often. We look forward to seeing you then!
  24. This weekend I visit the Kockice Convention in a small city near Croatias capital Zagreb. It is the first time that Ed Petrac and his team pull this international event off and it seems to be quite a success from the start with almost 80 participants from 13 different countries. So it is a weekend of fun and seeing old friends and making new together with a public exhibition of fantastic MOCs. I attach some pictures I took earlier today. The events website is http://convention.kockice.hr/. So I really hope that this event grows and will see many more AFOLs from all over the world in the years to come. Thanks so much to Ed, Marin and all other involved for making this great event happen! It is a true pleasure to join.
