  • LAN Town Hall - Spring 2021

    Jordan P

Twice a year members of AFOL Engagement host a LAN Town Hall to talk to members of Recognized Community and share updates, challenges, and achievements. The goal is to provide a look back and a look forward to what is happening behind the scenes. It is a casual conversation with multiple presenters and a Q&A at the end.

Whether you are part of a Recognized Community or not, we hope you enjoy the content and get a better understanding of some of the exciting things happening behind the curtain. If you have any questions, please post them below.

The last question was about whether our local LUGs, which are based upon local physical meetings and events, will be permitted to continue to be a blend of physical and online LUG as they have evolved under Covid contraints. Our members are more connected than ever due to frequent online social events, and online access to meetings and conventions has meant that those with obstacles such as family caregiving or anxiety have been able to participate. We have become more inclusive because our LUGs are now a blend of online and physical. I have heard women say this is the first time they have been able to attend a convention because childcare responsibilities have prevented them from attending before. And I talked to a person with social anxiety who is uncomfortable with convention crowds, but was able to attend an online convention for tge first time. I ask Lego Group to consider revising their guidelines to permit LUGs to continue to be more inclusive through online activities.

2nd question: LUGs are local, but I also participate in an unofficial "LUG" that crosses international boundaries and is devoted to sharing information about how to sort, classify and organize Lego collections.  Is it posiible for topically organized LUGs, such as this, that cross international boundaries to gain recognition? Information and  strategies could be shared with  others and can be especially helpful to those just getting started in the Lego community.

What you describe sounds like what LEGO defines as a LOC or LEGO Online Community (as opposed to a traditional LUG which is more localised and organises physical events). There are numerous RLOCs on the LAN As for topical, I think ROBOTMAK3RS is a great example of a RLOC that is centred around robotics.

@LadyBrilliantBuilder Great question. It is amazing to see how LUGs are adapting to this new world and I completely agree that there are many benefits to having virtual meetings, activities and events. LUGs are allowed to do this. It is perhaps a misconception that LUGs must continue physical activities especially during these times. For many members of LUGs the meetings and events are the highlight of their day/month/year and for LUGs that have not gone virtual, there are likely members who are having adverse reaction to the lack of socialization and shared experience. For this reason, I continued to be impressed by how LUGs are finding creative ways to thrive.

As @Jetro de Château mentioned. There are also LOCs and these can be AFOLs of a shared passion (perhaps theme specific or building style) but also for people who are remote or distant from other AFOLs. Once the global event rebalances, I don't think LUGs will be turning into LOCs but there is nothing wrong with LUGs continuing to have virtual events and activities.
